With the price of ice cream now going for over R60 for a 2-litre a tub, I’m super excited to have finally come across an awesome recipe for making ice cream at home, with just one, cheap ingredient! Because even on special, the 2-litre tub of ice cream can cost you over R40. And we’re not even going to mention the more expensive brands which sell for well over R60 for any kind of tub.
The secret to this super tasty, super frugal ice cream is that there is only 1 ingredient in it: bananas. Who would have thought, right? With R10 or so for a kilo of bananas, sometimes even less, you can make quite a sizeable amount of ice cream at home. Double that if you like, and it’s still R20, which is still cheaper than the going price for ice cream in the shops.
It’s a much healthier alternative too. It is all natural, with no additives or processed sugars. The natural sugars found in the bananas will satisfy your craving for something sweet but will not cause your blood sugar levels to spike as processed sugars do.
Bananas are very good for our bodies. They are rich in:
- Potassium, which is good for your heart and healthy blood pressure levels.
- Magnesium, which helps maintain your energy levels and also helps your relax.
- Fibre, which is good for your digestive tract.
- Vitamin B, which contributes to the healthy functioning of your body’s metabolism.
Those are just some of the benefits of eating bananas. Bananas are also probably the most affordable fruit that you can buy in this part of the world. We love bananas and we always have them at home. This is yet another reason why I was so chuffed to have found this recipe. It tastes so yummy and goes down really well on a scorching hot summer’s day in Gauteng.
